Silver Kathakali Mask

Kathakali is characterized by its elaborate make-up and costumes consisting of several layers of clothing, ornate headdresses and accessories like gold necklaces, bracelets, armlets, chestplates and anklets. This mirror-mask was likely used as part of the ensemble of a master dancer of KathakaliThis mask, made of silver takes the form of a many-hooded naga, surmounted by a tiered chattri. It could likely have been worn as part of the performance of one of the 'noble' or 'pachha' characters in a Kathakali drama.
