Bed hanging

This bed hanging is ornately decorated with auspicious symbols such as the qilin, deer and peony flowers in gold embroidery. The qilin is a symbol for fertility and good fortune whilst the deer symbolises longevity. Peonies represent springtime which is considered an auspicious time to get married. Rich fertility symbols reflected the hope for many heirs to the family name, as wedding beds were important as places of conception for the next generation of the family.
