Gold buckle and belt

The buckle of the gold belt features a dynamic interplay of stylised ribbons, some of which are lightly chased to give the effect of depth and texture. This Art Deco pattern is repeated in the smaller plaques of pierced gold. Several markings can be found on the back : Dun jing (盾金 or pound gold), 实叻, 寳要, and ‘HP’. While belts with multiple panels were popular in the Straits Settlements at the beginning of the 20th century, the style could be traced to the courts of Palembang.
