Kantha Embroidery

Kantha is quilted embroidery done by the women of Bengal, India. The women create bed spreads, wraps and book or mirror covers among others either for domestic use or as gifts. The Kantha are influenced by the rural scenes, city life and modernisation, mythological scenes or depict floral and vine motifs. They are produced from recycled cloth and yarn of old saris.Depicted in this kantha is the cosmos, flora, fauna and village life in red and blue hues.
