'Palanquin in Singapore'

This print (wood engraving) shows a palanquin led by a syce in Singapore. The palanquin or gharry was the main form of transport for Europeans. Horses, mainly imported from Australia and India, were auctioned for sale at Raffles Place up to the late 1880s.
