Textile

This textile was woven with silk which was dyed using natural dyes. The traditional textiles of Lembata especially its bridewealth textiles are highly valued ceremonial pieces. They formed part of the female goods, given by the bride’s family in exchange for male or hard goods like gold, silver and ivory in weddings. These textiles have symbolic values, expressing the qualities of the women who made them and the strength of the marriage bond.
