Members of the Legislative Council posing with Governor Harry St George Ord at Government House

Members of the Legislative Council included the eminent Hoo Ah Kay (standing, second from right), the first Asian to earn that distinction. Nicknamed Whampoa after his birthplace, he came to Singapore as a fifteen-year-old in 1830 and went on to become a wealthy merchant and prominent philanthropist.
