Mu Dan Ting

Mudanting (Peony Pavilion), is a popular printed book for entertainment. It is the love story of scholar Liu Mengmui and Du Liniang, the only daughter of Du Bao, Prefect of Nan'an of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). Tang Xianzu (1550-1616), the author, was a master dramatist of the late Ming period. This story is one among his four works collectively known as ‘The Four Dreams of Linchuan’. This collection of stories mirror the author’s life, which began with his enthusiastic pursuit for political recognition and ended with his disillusionment with officialdom. They brought Chinese drama to maturity, and enjoyed great popularity throughout China. From these dramas, a great number of notated editions, scripts and librettos were derived.
