Spanning an area of 20.63-hectares, the Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West was built and developed in the 1980s and it was one of the largest town garden project by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) at that time. The park was built and designed by a Japanese contractor and the whole project cost $2.7 million. Slight modifications were made to the contours of the park such as the construction of footpaths, the incorporation of part of the former Cheng San Road and an observatory deck. A natural habitat for flora and fauna, one can find typical tropical plants as well as butterflies and insects. At present, the park remains a popular place for leisure, recreation and butterfly-spotting activities.
